Tried to install and noticed nothing was really different, double checked page on FF ext. and found this:

The author of Filterset.G no longer maintains it, and the website it is hosted on is defunct. This add-on page is available for historical reasons only. Please use Adblock Plus with one of its recommended subscriptions instead.

The thread you were reading was from 2008 and in the time since then the Filterset.G Updater has indeed been discontinued as such. AdBlock Plus gives you a list of places that it can update from after you install it and restart Firefox. If you have not yet restarted Firefox (simply close it then re-open) then try that and see if it has an effect.
