I selected this vga card over 8600GT 256mb GDDR3.. is it a wise decision ?
My main requirement is to play GTA IV @ 1280x800 (low/medium settings) Will i have an advantage having extra memory though it's DDR2 ?
Nvidia geforce 8600GT
Core Clock (MHz) 500
Shader Clock (MHz) 1000
Memory Clock (MHz) 602 (it says Dual 400MHz RAMDAC in specs, will i get 2x bandwidth ? I see cards like XFX 8600GT ddr2 running @ 1100Mhz)
Memory Amount 512mb DDR2
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) 6.4
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) 3.6
Btw can i run it on a 450w PSU ? Pls help me out guys! |

If you plan on running GTA IV in low/medium setting s then i'd say you've got yourself a good card.
As for the PSU, i'd recommend around 600w for complete stability and room to upgrade in the future

For the PSU, something with dual fans too seeing as you live in a hot country.

The 8600GT needs to be supplied with 22A on the +12V rails combined to keep that in mind when looking at PSU's.
My PSU would run the PC fine, it has (off the top of my head) 41A and 550W so would power it nicely with plenty of room for future improvements

Memory clock : 602 Mhz ( DDR = 1200 Mhz ? )
My system specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 2.66ghz (65w)
19" Samsung (18w powered by PSU)
250GB Sata II
Intel DG31PR
2GB DDR II 800 Mhz (Single Channel)
DVD Rw
450w PSU (i'm not sure about the rails, amps, etc) It's a generic psu which comes with the casing.

Yeah it'll be DDR-1204MHz
Hmmmm, personally, I never trust PSU's that come with cases to be powerful enough. Some may beg to differ though.
Post the brand name and model if possible then we can try to find out for you
Just bear in mind what Dave mentioned if you need to purchase a new PSU

Hey Josh!
I searched for 8600GT power requirements & got the following Quote:
1/ 350 watt power supply with 12V and 20A
2/ 8600 GT requires a 300W + psu with a combined 20A on the 12v rail(s)

You have to remember that the graphics card isn't the only thing that uses the 12v rail.
Those quotes you gave are probably assuming a pc with one hard drive and one optical, if you have any more than that the it would be best to go for slight overkill on the PSU to allow for extra 12v using devices.
