ATI 9600 128meg or Nvidia fx5500 256meg?

Hi all, i already have the ATI 9600 in my pc but wondered if the fx5500 would be a bit better.

Both are agp.

Anyone got an opinion?

I would stick with your 9600. I think ATI's lower end cards are better than Nvidia's. Of course Nvidia beats the crap out of them in the higher end.

I haven't heard anything good about the FX series...absolutely nothing. I've heard they were quite disappointing actually. If I had to pick an AGP 4x/8x card, I'd go with the ATI x1650 pro. That was a very good card and I think it will likely be a very good step up from the 9600 you have. For 80 bucks, that's a much better trade since the x1650 can run some good sized monitors and plays games as tough as FEAR or Far Cry. Not too shabby. And it almost matches the FX 5500 for price. It's a 15 dollar offset, but honestly...I think that's easily spared.

Sam, that depends on your definition of lower end. If you can call the 7600 GS/GT low end, then I'd have to disagree. If it were an ATI low end versus that, it's no contest. The 7600 GT would pull ahead in just about all areas I would think.

If you're talking below the 7 series, then I would definitely agree.

Looks like i will stick with my trusty 'ol 9600 then.

I'm not looking to buy a card at the moment as i don't have the money. The fx5500 came out of a scrapped pc that i broke up for parts.

Ya lower than the 7 series. I have had a 7600GT and it was a absolutely wonderful card. I could play COD4 and even Crysis with it.

ooo nooooooo MUCH PREFER the fx5500
then again i am such a nVIdea fan lol

though to be honest i think the FX5500 was a sort of upgrade from the FX5200 which works much better than its successor.

so in this case i will have to (and it breaks my heart to say this ) choose the 9600 over the 5500

Ya I am a Nvidia fan also. But some of the lower end ATI cards beat the lower end Nvidia cards.

I'm sort of in between on the Nvidia versus AMD debate. Nvidia has quality parts that have already proven themselves to be powerful, efficient, and reliable. AMD has had a bit of trouble keeping up with the power factor, but their parts have maintained efficiency and reliability. Their drivers have usually been very solid, and recently AMD came out with the 4850/4870. Those cards are powerful indeed and will probably steal some of Nvidia's thunder given the price for the power. You should have a look at some of the 4850 benchmarks. They're impressive. 29 frames in Crysis at high resolution and high quality. And for about $190 dollars I'd say they put a thorn in Nvidia's side there. If I wanted an upgrade, I would likely buy that.

Rik, if you find a card from the X1000 series from ATI, then definitely yoink it. Or if you find an AGP 7 series nvidia card, definitely bag that.

From my personal experience with both cards, it's not worth the change mate. You'll find the most minimal difference at best.

I will have to agree with you, since i owned FX5200 few years ago, it has very poor performance on splinter cell, FEAR and even Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed!

So I brought a 6600GT AGP, it packs a quite punch on FEAR, which it's very impressive for $101 ( That was few years ago anyway ).

So far I'm running on dual 6600GT PCI-E on SLI that i got for free from a friend in US, and it runs much similar to a single 6600GT AGP.

The new system parts would earns you the better benefits on playing games in much higher quality than ATI 9600 goes.

I think i will stick with my trusty 'ol 9600. I have been using it for quite a while now and have never had a single problem with it, unlike my previous 9550 that i had to get replaced twice before i had a card that would keep going.

I am sticking with my 8800GT!

Good thing is I won't have to buy a new card for awhile.
