Unhappy Aero errors after windows 7 Service Pack install

Last week I installed Windows 7 SP 1, plus many updates (KB890830, Intel Display - mobile 4 series Express chipset driver, KB2488113, Lenovo Display THinkpad Display 1280x800). Now I'm having display problems which seem to be related to the windows Aero graphics package.

Symptoms:
- MS Office icon graphics are messed up (reversed icons, non-transparent, three buttons in top right corner of office windows are not in color)
- gfxui.exe process consumes up to 50% of CPU
- some right click-context menus do not display
- Intel Graphics Property window won't come to foreground

I'm running Windows 7, 32-bit, on a lenovo x200.
I don't believe this is virus oriented, but rather has to do w/ either the Intel 4 series drivers or the lenovo thinkpad display drivers.
I can't rollback the driver installs (option is grey'd out).
I have Intel driver version 8.15.10.2302

Thanks for any suggestions.
