"missing" external hard drive

I've got a Maxtor external hard drive - stiil attached to my computer but it's "missing"
If I go to "my computer" the G drive is not there.

I've attempted re-booting, removing the drive by unplugging it (I get a "bing" from windows XP that something has changed but it is still not there when I re-plug the drive.

I've also attempted to restore the computer to an earlier date with out luck... Any tips? I've got 300 GB I can't get to... ARRGGHH!!!

Thanks,
Scott

If the drive is not active it will not show in 'my computer' - this is often the case if the drive is new and unformatted perhaps.
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management and you should see all your various drives listed there.
In the lower central section you can check for drives that are unallocated and fix it there using the tools option.
Tell us what you see.
If this fails to show the drive it is possible that it is faulty or perhaps there is an error in your USB - can you plug the drive into another PC to check it?

Hi Albert!
I finally got another computer to try my "missing" hard drive on. It doesn't show up there either. I also tried a couple other thumb drives and they do show up.... I'm not a happy camper right now.... is there some way to "go internal" and try to save my files from this drive? Or are there other tricks to try?

Thanks for your help,
Scott

If you have checked the drive as I suggested and it is still not showing, it may be dead. Depending on what sort it is, you might be able to extract the drive from the caddy and connect it to the innards of your desktop - this is not recommended unless you know what you are doing!
