Question [SOLVED] DVD/CD drive suddenly stopped working

this is probably a waste of time putting this here as it seems to simply a dead drive not but here is the problem anyway:

Problemo
My friends latop has been working fine for ages but all of sudden the DVD drive on it has suddenly stopped working for no reason. it has me stumped as it was fine for ages with no problems at all except that the DVD player software on the laptop stoped working propaly

however and im guessing that this may be the problem my m8s sister has been slamming the draw on the drive quite babdly and im guessing that has damaged the mechanics on the drive.

What i have tried
I have tried opening up the drive and looking at the mechanics drive but it all looks clean and tidy and doesnt seem to be any problems there.

I also thought that the drive may not be playing DVD but may play CD but it is not playing either.

So as i said earluer i think that this is a los cause but if you do have any ideas then please let me know.

I know RIK made a commen ealier to me about raising the voltage on the laser but i do not know how to do that

Cheers

What might have happened is your device driver might have stopped working.

As you might know, every device has a driver and without it, it's a useless piece of equipment. It needs them there digits to function right!

Try reinstalling your device driver for the dvd drive if at all possible. If you can't do that without reformatting and you want to avoid that, then check for the following.

Go to Start, Control panel, System, Hardware Tab, Device Manager.

Check for your drive in there, and get the model number. Then google for that specific device and a driver for it. You may find the file from the drive manufacturer's page, or from the company page that made the laptop, i.e. the hp website if it's an hp.

I doubt it's a problem with the drive itself. Those things can take quite some abuse before breaking.

If that doesn't work there is a registry fix which is a common one - cannot find it but it is on the forum somewhere. If you need it let me know as I know I have a file copy on my system somewhere....

18. Confirm with and OK.
19. In the right hand window pane select the LowerFilters registry key and press the delete key ont he keyboard.
20. Confirm with and OK.
21. Click the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the Registry Editor window to close it.
22. After this is completed, go to device manager and uninstall the drive. Turn off the PC and re boot it, and the drive should work again
NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software,
you may need to reinstall that software.

If that fails then I would conclude that the drive really has given up. Cheap way round is a USB external drive. If the drive is toast then a reinstall won't fix it. Sorry.

To make sure the problem lies with the drive and not with windows, try booting the lappy up with a windows cd and/or a bootable dvd. If it still wont work then it's fubar.
