[SOLVED] Internal and external DVD drives disappeared

Both the internal and external DVD drives on my dad's PC have gone from Computer. I have looked in device manager and have found one, presumably the internal one, it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" so I uninstalled it and then installed it again with the "Scan for Hardware Changes" button but it has failed to install and has thrown up the same error again.

It's a Dell Inspiron 530 With Visa Home Premium, I'll post up other details if necessary.

He said that all he did was uninstall iTunes and Safari and now they're gone.

Would a system restore help at all (I doubt it but you never know) or maybe the Dell website would have new drivers on?

Cheers.

Will do, Donna.

I'm on the Dell site now and it has 4 sets of firmware for this make of drive, but no drivers. Nice and helpful, then.

If it happens again Dave, there is a registry fix for this known problem. Cannot remember what it is now but will dig for it if you need it.

I was hoping you'd get your registry fix out

I know you've posted it a couple of times before but I can never remember where If it's in my own thread I'll be able to find it

CD-Rom or DVD Disappeared
BACK UP FIRST

Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to the branch indicated above, locate the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Right click each and select Delete.

If you desire, you can right click on the {4D36E965..........} branch and select Export. This will create a REG file that can be re-imported should you find a need to.

You may also want to delete the following 4 Registry keys, as per the instructions above:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdr4_2K
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdralw2k
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdudf
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\UdfReadr

Or apply this manual edit: Save the file below to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

Thats the one! The only caveat is that it does not tell you to make a backup of the registry first - always a good idea to export a copy of the whole thing before you start mucking about with it.
