If you want find out more about your system - then download Everest home Edition. This will give you all information about your system, example; motherboard - make and model.

Sounds pretty much like the actual speaker itself, although I could be wrong. If settings have been tampered with, e.g balance between speakers etc then thats what could have caused the problem

Yes, Josh is right. If you wanted to say that, why didn't you do it over PM?

Clair i think its a problem with the cabling with the speakers to the mainboard inside the monitor. It would be easier to use external speakers.

If you have drivers installed which have an Audio Manager, Such as "Realtek HD Audio Manager" or something along those lines, some settings could have been edited to display one side louder than the other.
Another possability could be that the Master Volume speaker balances might not be central as someone above has already said.
What i would suggest is that you first check the master volume to ensure the audio balance is central as well as finding out which audio driver you use is upto date, if you are unsure, try seeing if your motherboard disk has drivers on them for you to install.
I hope any of these suggestions help.
Good luck
Phil.
