Hi all - running a 3 yr old tower system on XP. I added a PCI USB 2 card and the sound has stopped working. Windows says everything is working OK - but alas - no sound.
Any ideas?

Is it a pci sound card or a built in one?

It might sound like a crazy idea, but can you try the USB card in a different PCI slot?

Hi Dave - was trying to save that one as a last resort - takes ages to unplug this system - lol
Was hoping it was a quick fix - well you can hope!!

You could try booting into safe mode then having a look to see if there is a conflict via device manager!
I suspect an irq conflict. Even tho the sound card is built in it still uses resources as a pci one would.
Let me know if you need instructions for what i have suggested.

Check the BIOS and make sure all the IRQ allocations are set to automatic - if Windows is not showing a fault in the device manager it is more likely to be a driver error - and this is a real possibility if you have XP SP3 installed.
Trying Dave's suggestion of a different PCI slot is one I always try early on - I know it is a pain but it needs to be done!

Did you go into safe mode tho? You will get different information compared to normal mode.

Does safe mode show any duplicated or redundant device drivers?

Try this

Its a PITA

Already tried uninstalling Vinyl AC'97 - and installing again.
Didn't show any conflicts or redundant devices either - very puzzling

I was just about to suggest removing the USB card.
If the sound works without the card then it means that you must have a device conflict.
Can you please tell me what mobo (motherboard) you have, i can then look up it's bios information.
If you don't know what make and model your mobo is then you can download Everest Home from here - |MG| EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 and use that to look the information up. MajorGeeks is a nice, safe site.

Did check the audio on Bios - said auto - changed to enable but didn't alter the problem
Field Value
Motherboard ID 08/17/2005-K8M800-8237-6A7L1J19C-00
Field Value
Award BIOS Type Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Does this data help with mobo?

That information seems to be about the chipset rather than the mobo itself.
I still think you need to try removing the USB card.
I get a lot of different mobo's when i search for K8M800 http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl...h+Images&gbv=2
I just found this, which looks like it is the correct manual http://www.machspeed.com/manuals/VIPER/K8M8MSR1A.pdf
It says you have 4x USB 2.0 ports on the back and 4x internal USB 2.0 headers on the mobo totalling 8x USB 2.0 ports. I am now wondering why you need a USB 2.0 card at all?

The USB,s were all working as USB1, and were slow. There were 4 on the back of the unit and 2 on the front.

In that case, did your computer come with a driver installation disk? If so, the USB driver should be on it hopefully.
Also, is your windows version up to date?
I know this isn't the main problem, but it could well have an effect on it.

Dear geordiejeff.
If your sound comes back WITHOUT the soundcard, you've got your onboard soundchip on and it's conflicting. You'll have to take out your soundcard (with the computer OFF, of course!) then go into BIOS and turn off the onboard soundchip. Then put your card back, if Windows says 'Do you want to install it'? say Yes and let Windows find the installation (assuming it's already installed!) automatically. Once it's found the installation automatically, it should work.
If it still doesn't, then go into START/Control Panel/ System/Device Manager/Sound Video and Game Controllers/Soundcard and make sure there's no yellow question marks on it. If no, but there's still no sound, double-click on the soundcard, go through the tabs on the menu that comes up and make sure everything's enabled.
If there's STILL no sound - and I know this sounds dumbass, but I've forgotten about this one myself sometimes because it's TOO obvious - make sure all the sliders on the soundcard's control panel are on full. If there's still no sound, then go into the control panel of whatever media player you're using and make sure it's outputting to the soundcard - that the soundcard's mentioned in the 'Output To' part of your media player's preference. Where that is, differs between media players. If STILL no joy, go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Entertainment /Volume Control and make sure all the sliders are on full.
If STILL no joy after all that, call back and I'll give you a couple of more complicated ideas!!
Yours in friendship
