The realtek on board sound card on an Asus P5n board has stopped working.
There is no longer an option in BIOS to enable/disable it.
It shows as a PCI device in XP
None of the downloadable driver sets work.
I have reset the BIOS
Any ideas anyone?

Has a bios flash been attempted on it perhaps?

Since I posted the query I have found a BIOS update which I applied successfully - no difference.
I may have to give up with it and fit a cheapo sound card to it.
The machine is one of mine from about April this year and I know the user would not know the first thing about the BIOS and updates and so on.
What is weird is that the BIOS is showing settings for an Azalia sound card - but Asus only show drivers for Realtek sound cards. May have to take this back to basics, relflash the BIOS and start all over again!

I was going to suggest flashing it to it original bios if you have it.
What is it's current bios version number and what version was it shipped with? If you can remember that is.

The machine came back to me for software related issues, amongst which was a crash every time the user tried to switch between user accounts. I tried SPIII on it which was terminal so then reinstalled XP Pro and SPIII. Everything went back OK except this sound card but that is all wrong at the BIOS level and I cannot blame SPIII in this case as the problem is at BIOS level and no higher.
I have looked at the FAQs and there was one very similar except that it was about disabling the sound card and the lack of any options to do this. Asus response was to upgrade the BIOS which I had already done.

Looks like a pci card may be the only option then.
[Edit] Just a thought, is there any physical damage to the mobo that you can see?

no, the board looks fine and I did have a very close look at it (but did not take it out of the case).
What is really irritating is that it worked when I first set it up and for some reason it packed up when I was messing with the SPIII update. I hate it!

I built this system back in March/April and it has not been touched since.
Hang on - just had a thought - it is under the feet of the user and I just wonder if the front sound panel has been given the occasional boot or two and shorted out the connections.
Back in 2.

Also, even tho the sound is built in it still communicates via the pci system, make sure any other pci cards are seated correctly and not faulty. I have had a faulty pci network card in an asus based pc go wrong and stop the sound from working at all and it also affected the graphics card and caused bsod's.
I suspect that that is a very rare fault, bit it's a possibility.

Well I just checked the front panel and it is OK; disconnecting it makes no difference. Trying to install the drivers before the SPIII means reinstalling the whole thing all over again and a cheapo sound card would be better for me given the time I have spent on the thing!
I'll check the only card in there Rik - a PCiE card and get back in 2.

Had too much coffee already! don't smoke any more. Thinking is fine but I have just about given up with this one so will wait and see what Asus have to say about it and then get a cheapo sound card.

Albert,
Find the Azalea driver, that is the issue. I haven't a clue why Realtek doesn't work but in cases where I have seen Azalea mentioned in the bios, that is the driver you need.

There is no longer an option in BIOS to enable/disable it.
| Is there a jumper on the mobo to enable/disable onboard audio?
