Is playing up im not getting full sound

Its skipping and i have to wiggle it

Is there a headphones plug on the back ??

It's possible to have a jack of any type go south.
Try your headphones in another piece of equipment if you can. At least that
will eliminate or confirm that plug being good, bad, or intermittent.
If it is the jack there is not much one can do except replace it.
If it's a lappy, it's a bear to replace.
Good luck and keep wiggling.

oh I'm wiggling as usual

Its a desktop if i push it right in it sounds tinny

I have to get it just right

its annoying me

Is it a dedicated sound card you're plugging it into or on-board?

Check your headphone plug first on a radio or mp3 player or something.
If it works OK then the jack is probably the culprit.
At least with a dedicated sound card you can replace that individually
without having to go a new mobo.
Take the card out and dust/blow it off including inside the jack.
Plug it back in firmly and give it a shot. Worst would be sound card replacement.

Hey, whatever works. Duct tape and WD40 make the world go round.
If it moves and you don't want it to move...duct tape.
If it doesn't move and you want it to...WD40.

Could be caused by dirty contacts inside the jack socket, spray a little WD40 on to a pipe cleaner, insert into jack socket, give it a twist or two even a wiggle if you like

then try headphones again.
Do your speakers have a headphone socket on them, many do? IF so use that.

On the back of your PC there will either be three, six or none 3.5mm jacks for speakers. They will either be on the motherboard, in which case they will be near the USB sockets or on-board graphics (if it has that). If they are not there then they will be in a line in one of the PCI slots, which means that you have a PCI sound card. You can plug your headphones into the green one, as that is the normal stereo speaker socket.

By the sounds of it you are using built-in sound, so look around all the other connectors up the top half, under the power supply but before the expansion slots, for a green headphone/speaker socket first.

Have you tried plugging them into something else as Gunner said? Pretty much anything that puts out sound will have a headphone socket on, the TV, radio, MP3 player, anything like that. If it is still the same then it will eliminate the sound chipset on your computer and you will most likely have a broken cable inside the insulation on the headphones. Sometimes they break down at the connector end, and if it is down that end then there's not a lot you can do, unfortunately.

An update

i have taken the case off as i have lost all sound now and the headphone socket appears to be split in 2
Its not very accessible and i don't want to pull it to bits at the minute

Is there such a thing as a usb /headphone connector or am i just as well to buy a new pair usb headphones ?

You could get a USB connector and cut the one off the headphones off and solder the new one on, but it all depend on how you are at soldering

Plus you'd have to wrap it in electrical tape to give it that perfect DIY look

That reminds me, my headphones don't work on the left, need to fix them

Of course not, but when you're on your own you can turn it up to 11
