I am not sure if this is hardware or software related.
On the wifes computer the sound fluctuates, it is onboard soundMAX HD audio.
There are no updates for the drivers, so I am at na loss what to try next.
Any suggestions welcome.

Did it do it on boot up or just broke while in use?

I do not know as the wife told me when I came back from work.
I did reboot it but the problem remained.

What make/model are the speakers? (I ask a lot of questions I know )
Is it both speakers doing it, and at the same time?
Have you got other speakers you can try with it?
Is any of the cable damaged?

The speakers are Logitech, I had already tried a set of Creative speakers to see if the speakers were at fault, that is how I concluded it was the onboard sound.

If you are certain it's the onboard sound, you could always get a PCI sound card.

I was asking this question to see if there was anyway to test the sound chip, I know I could buy a PCI card, but was wondering if anything could be done before i splash the cash |

Aah right is there any way you could find older drivers on the web? Which ones do you use?

I tried older drivers but it said that a newer version was installed, so I rempved them and tried the older drivers and they were incompatable, so reinstalled the latest drivers and still the same problem, so its splash the cash time.

It's looking that way... are you sure you downloaded the correct ones?

Problem solved, I had an old PCI sound card, I fitted that, used Everest home to find out exactly what the soundcard was, downloaded and installed the drivers, disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS and viola problem solved.
