may I make a couple of suggestions?
Avast has become quite a poor program, low detection rates and many fp's.
AVG has become bloated.
Comodo AV is still in Beta form, and may be a bit naggy for the average user. It also comes bundled with an anti-spy, which I dont like, I like to make my own choices. As it is beta, Im going to suggest by email that they make it optional, as it is shaping up to be a good program.
(I doubt they will listen)
Zone Alarm has it's problems recently too, a lot of people seem to be dropping it.
This file scanner has been discussed at G2G recently and is very good apparently. http://virscan.org/
Bill Castner's Fix Policies is an excellent program for when your regedit etc have been disabled by malware. http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/...ixPolicies.exe
Review here PC World Community: MMVP Castner's "FixPolicies" vs Dial-a-Fix's "Policies
Another anti-virus & firewall here RISING - Antivirus,Firewall,Virus,Trojan,Worm Protection,Free Download
Not free, and Ive not personally tested the trial as yet. Given that a lot of malware is originating in Asia, it should be good.

| It's not a "best of" list. It's what's trusted to be malware free. I use only Avast! so anybody will have an argument there The owner of MajorGeeks says Avira has become the top free AV for reliable protection and less FP's. He tests an incredible amount of software for his site. I'm not listening......yet. Quote:
This file scanner has been discussed at G2G recently and is very good apparently. http://virscan.org/ | An oversight. Added. FixPolicies added.
Dial-a-fix has MANY other functions so I'm not really sure what they're on about in the review. Fixing policies is just one of the many things it attempts to do. In addition I've never trusted PC World's reviews. Too biased towards what makes them money. Quote:
Another anti-virus & firewall here RISING - | There are many more I could add. I haven't tried it either and may end up removing it, but for our Australian friends I added RISING.

As a long time Avast user too, Im confident they will get it together again, I do miss that voice.
I dont bother with reviews myself, that was just an example.
I did read something about ZA today. I knew it was offering the yahoo toolbar as an option, just before I stopped using it, but now it is also installing MyWebSearch?
And when i was testing the heular virus last week, I was getting ZA popups which I thought were fake, but apparently they werent. Has ZA descended into adware?
You can prune these posts. |

| Don't be nodding off at the PC when " The virus database has been updated" LMAO! Quote: |

| Yahoo is one thing but if this is true then ZA might find it's way off of the list! That's totally unacceptable. I have edited in to not install the SafeSearch stuff when installing Comodo. Toolbars are the new "thing" with free software. It's a shame....
My lists are never complete (in my mind) so please tell me anything new old or whatever that will fit here.

It actually started out as a very small list of just what I liked and nothing more. It soon grew into what it is now. I've had it posted on another site for about 9 months now and keep adding to it every month or so. I wish I had more safe download sites to add. I refuse to put Download.com and the likes on it because they all host screensavers, which are known for having extra "goodies" packed with them |

You got a good list there, but if I can think of any other suggestions, Ill be sure to post.
There was a firewall type of program, Im told is very good, but not for the faint-hearted, or me. So probably not a good suggestion.

All i have to say on the matter is, if EF says its ok then that's good enough for me. I trust his judgement implicitly.

Thanks Rik!
That was sort of the motivation for the list. I've seen too many cases of "I heard Ad-Aware was good so I downloaded it" but what they really downloaded was adwarealert or something like that.

Another reliable, trusted and FREE Registry Cleaner
is Eusing's Registry Cleaner
Normal caveats apply when using registry cleaners including the recommended ones.
#1 rule: Make a full back up the registry before making any changes #2 rule: remember rule #1 |
