Tales from the toolroom - expensive blob of solder
A brand new system started behaving really badly when I first delivered it and set it up. Screens scrolling uncontrollably, help pages opening and closing all by themselves - but it all stopped and sat there looking at me when I took my hands off the keyboard or stopped moving them over the keys. Weird. I discovered that if I picked up the keyboard the images on the screen went completely bananas. Client with new new machine not impressed and suggested I take it all away and come back with it working properly. Oh dear.
I did as was bid and back in the workshops connected the wksps keyboard - no problems.
I had a scrute at the new one - a wireless Logitech keyboard - and could hear a rattling noise if I turned it over. Took it to bits and found this little ball of solder inside - put it all back together and perfecto - all working fine.
I suppose this has cost me a bit of goodwill and several miles of wasted journeys.
Moral - the silliest and smallest things can often be the cause of apparently expensive faults....
