It is a wired microsoft intellipoint optical mouse
I just did a new build. Everything went fine but my mouse freezes randomly for 5-10 seconds. It is very annoying and I have tried all the obvious. Looking for more ideas
Tried booting from safe mode and uninstalling the mouse, then rebooting and letting Vista take care of it.
Tried downloading intellipoint software from microsoft.
It seems to get a little better with a PS/2 to usb adapter but still freezes randomly.
I will soon be getting a new one to see if the mouse have finally given up on me, but I am thinking that is not the problem as it happened right after new motherboard, CPU, RAM, graphics card, and a clean install of vista.

Yeah, that`d be my suggestion. Try a different mouse and see if it helps.
If it doesn`t, then obviously it`s something far more serious.

The weirdest thing about it is that the optical light blinks once or twice while frozen, then lights up really bright like it is first turning on.
Its almost like my mouse is rebooting it self
It's been with me for about 6 years now, I'm kind of attached.

Yup, I know what you mean mate. I get attached to things like that too.
Hopefully a different mouse will solve your problem.

Before I realized it was wired I was about to ask about the batteries If it's that old it may be broken. Have you tried a different usb port? Could there be any incompatibility issues?

yea i tried different ports. no luck.
The mouse started acting up exactly when I formatted and reinstalled Vista
which makes me think it cant be related to the mouse

Yeah, it's more likely to be a compatibility/driver issue. Do you have another computer you can test it on?

I think that did it howard. It makes sense because after I formatted, I installed XP then upgraded back to vista, I didn't do anything in XP other than let it load default drivers, then I upgraded and it saves the XP files in a folder called windows.old
I didn't think any of those files were accessible though.
Do you think I should delete that file. There was no data, just a default install of XP
Either way the mouse is back to functioning good as new.
Edit: Nevermind it's back to freezing after 5minutes of working great. I just deleted windows.old and it seems to be working again.

Damn, and I thought we`d got it.
Maybe, just maybe, it is a faulty or incompatible mouse?

no I think it is working after deleting the windows.old folder from the C:\
it wasn't on microsoft instructions but they made it sound like that is what causes the error.
one more file in there I am cautious about deleting BOOTSECT.BAK
is this a rollback file in case you abort in the middle of installing vista?

I got the file cannot be deleted because the file is open in another program. Should I remove it from safemode or you think something is actually using it. I know nothing about this file, and didn't find much through google

Well, the file won`t do any harm if left.
However, you can delete it from safe mode if you wish.
It`s just a backup file, that`s all.
