Help!

Hey guys,

Well I'm not sure if this is the right area for this problem but here goes.

Working on my ccomputer last night and went to log of the computer just froze with none of my desk top items visible, so I left it for a while to see if it would fix it self but it didn't. So I pressed the main on/off button my computer and I got an error message saying somthing about the memory (not sure what). Anyway I manually turned off the computer and went to bed, when I got up this morning the computer started up ok or so I thought. It goes to the account log on screen but it's just a black screen with nothing on it but you can still see the mouse cursor moving???

What the hell could be wrong I hope I haven't lost anything all my work is on this computer!!

Thanks

Troy

Hello try starting it in safe mode

se here how to

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

does it start in safe mode please?

It sounds like it may be that explorer.exe is not loading properly.

When it gets stuck on the black screen, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and click File > New Task (Run...) and then type in explorer.exe. This should then load your desktop.

Just in case it comes up saying it can't find explorer.exe, then click Browse... and find it in C:\WINDOWS, or type in C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe. (Assuming Windows is installed to your C: drive)

If not then proceed with trying to boot into safe mode as Donna suggests.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried starting in safe mode when it first happend but it doen't work, I get the same thing but it has the safe mode in each corner of the screen but no log on options just a blck screen in the middle??

I will try what you suggested Daveskater but I'm thinking it maybe easier to get someone out to look at it, I just don't have the time to stuff around.

In the mean time if anyone else has any suggestions please post them.

Thanks guys

Troy

Test your RAM using Memtest 86+.

Download and run the Memtest86+ programme from HERE.

Download either the ISO version, or if you have a floppy drive, download the floppy version.

The ISO version needs to be burned to a cd as an image. Your burning software will tell you how to burn an image file.

Once done, with either the Memtest86+ cd in your cd drive, or the Metest86+ Floppy in your floppy drive, reboot your system.

Let the programme run for at least seven passes. If Memtest86+ gives you errors, then it`s likely your ram is bad. However, please be aware that some faulty ram can pass Memtes86+. Check each stick of ram individually, then together.

Please note: If Memtest86+ gives you errors, your ram is more than likely bad. However, please also be aware, that some faulty ram can pass Memtest86+ or any other software memory tester come to that.

If your ram checks out ok, then I suggest trying a Windows repair as per the instructions HERE.
