Cant play cd's or dvd's

Hey guys,

It's me once again. I'm having problems opening cd's and dvd's, when I put the disc in it looks like the computer recognises it but when I click on the cd drive it opens and all I get is a blank page?? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drive but still no good. I last used my cd drive about 2 months ago and it was fine. I have important files I need to access on a cd.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks

Troy

It may be a problem with a registry entry - follow these instructions to the letter and there is a good chance it will fix this error. If not then it may be a dirty read/write head (the stupid design of the things means they look upwards and all the dust and s hite rains down on their little eyeball).
1. Click Start.
2. Click Run.
3. In the "open" field type REGEDIT.
4. Click OK.
5. Click "File" in the menu bar.
6. Click "Export" from the drop down menu this will open a new box.
7. click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select "Local Disk (c".
8. In the File Name field type BACKUP.REG.
9. Verify that under the ?Export Range?, that the radio button is beside "All".
10. Click Save.
11. Click the plus sign (+) beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
12. Click the plus sign (+) beside System.
13. Click the plus sign (+) beside CurrentControlSet.
14. Click the plus sign (+) beside Control.
15. Click the plus sign (+) beside Class.
16. In the left hand window pane click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to select that key.
17. In the right hand window pane select the UpperFilters registry key and press the delete key on the keyboard.
18. Confirm with and OK.
19. In the right hand window pane select the LowerFilters registry key and press the delete key ont he keyboard.
20. Confirm with and OK.
21. Click the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the Registry Editor window to close it.
22. After this is completed, goto device manager and uninstall the drive. Turn off the PC and re boot it, and the drive should work again
NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software,
you may need to reinstall that software.

Try this

start
run

devmgmt.msc

find the drive and uninstall
reboot

Have tried that no good. When I try to open the cd it comes up with a blank screen, towards the top there is an address bar that has E:\ thats all I get except for some options on the left hand side.

When I found the drive in device manager it had unknown on it, where as before I'm pretty sure it didn't. I don't know if this has made a difference or not? Although I can burn cd's again.

Like I said I'm no genius with computers just trying to give you guys as much info as I can!

As I said above

I know it's been a while but I went and got a dvd rom cleaner but it won't read the disc to clean the lens. What the hell do I do now, do I need to take it somewhere for a proffessional to look at it??

Just sticking the cleaner into the drive will cause if to spin and clean the lens - unless of course the motor has failed and it is not spinning. Check to see if the disk has changed position - if the motor has failed you need a new drive - no big deal - or you could buy an external USB drive which might be cheaper.

Ok have sorted it out. It was a stupid program that Acer has called Acer E-lock and for some reason it locks all the drives every now and then, just a matter of going in and unlocking them.

Thanks for the advice anyway guys.
