How to get a web cam working

My friend gave me an old web cam of his he no longer uses and he claims it didn't come with any software. It is a Philips web cam that uses USB to connect to the computer. When I plug it in a pop up window says that new hardware has been detected but I can't figure out how to work it. Any help/suggestions will greatly be appreciated. Thanks .

Possibly you need the drivers - see if the model is listed here.

Yep it works A-OK. Only problem is it's not a very good quality web cam so I don't think I'll be using it that much.
