Anyone like to venture an opinion about what a server in a small LAN of max 6 machines should contain that a decent or hi spec workstation does not have - other than perhaps a larged hard drive?
Any opinions most welcome!

The first question I always ask someone that I am building a system for is - what's it gonna be used for?
An answer to that can hugely impact advice.

Sorry Rik - should have said - it is for a small office doing small office things and word and excel and powerpoint and so on. Nothing much and not much in the way of file storage required.]
cheers

Well for starters. Do they want Internet connectivity? And are they worried about speed?

I have found that small offices such as you describe usually do not really need a server. If they are just looking for a central place to store their files, a dedicated PC with a large hardrive will do just fine. If on the otherhand, they have mission critical apps that need to be hosted, need an email server, or have a need for hot swappable raid drives, then perhaps a dedicated server is needed.

If there's a router somewhere, maybe connect a NAS drive to it?

Good idea Dave - I can add this later as I have opted for a mirror array on the server to keep the price down. We can tweak the spec once we have a better idea of the workload in the place!
