Any ideas why all the USB ports on a PC suddenly stopped recognising USB flash drives?
Drives (3 tested ) all work on other systems
Ports work fine with other devices such as printers
I have tried removing them all in safe mode and rebooting to force a new install - no good!
Help!

Can you access the drive through "my computer" or as you said it just plain doesn't see it.
I had a similar problem on my computer where I would stick a usb flash drive in and it wouldn't "auto play" it. I had to manually open the drive up.

Hi Sam
Nope - drive is not visible in explorer at all. When I connect any of the drives there is a message to say there is an error and the device cannot be detected.

Do the drives show up in disk management?

Hmm that is weird. You know the devices work so that makes it even weirder. Sorry I can't help you anymore. But if I do think of something I will let you know.

Howard - nope - nothing there at all
Sam - it has to be something to do with the drivers for usb mass storage I think?
I'll let it rest overnight to see if anyone has any ideas tomorrow!
Thanks guys - I think I am resigned to reinstalling Windaz - a system restore to before the last windows update failed to make any difference as well.

do you still have the cd's for the drives? maybe if you reinstall them. Or just get rid of them completely.

Well, you could try sfc /scannow in the run menu to see if any OS files are missing or damaged.
You could also try a Windows repair.

Sam - we had 3 different drives (2 Kingston and 1 Crucial) and the system refused to talk to any of them.
Howard - I will see if I can get at the system using remote access to try this - trouble is that it is miles away and the price of petrol..............

Ah, I see. In that case it might be a bad idea so try sfc /scannow as if it finds any missing or corrupted files, it will ask for the Windows CD.

Might be a long shot but you could try a DriverAgent.com scan to see what results come back. May put you on the right path....then maybe not.

Thanks EF - not seen them before.
Have you used this tool? Does this install a whole load of rubbish that is impossible to get rid of afterwards?

I've used it a few times just for information. It is a clean site. It will install a small program (1.5kb or so) to do the scan.
Takes less than a minute from install to completing the scan. Just uninstall it when it's done.
