Home Web Server

I am thinking about setting up my own home web server just for my website and my forum. But do you think its a good idea?
I can use a home pc with a big HDD.

What are your takes on it?

Re: Home Web Server

Do you think it could be a pain with the space or the bandwidth?

Re: Home Web Server

Personally you should have no trouble with space. Just get a 3tb hard drive and a good amount of ram. I think thta bandwidth will be your biggest struggle - however it's not very hard to get some. IMO I'd rather have a good, reliable hosting site to host my website. You do NOT have to worry about all this then.

Re: Home Web Server

Some ISP's that allow a small web server gives bandwidth.

I dont have alot on my website that will take bandwidth.
My forum i will probably buy a small package with a mysql.

It depends on your internet connection. Do you have a nameserver? Is your up speed capable of higher than 448kbps? Do you have a static IP address? What software will you use for your server? What will you do about backups? What about email? The others are right, bandwidth could be a problem, as you could end up paying for it through your ISP.

Im still sorting out those.

Server i was thinking Windows Server 2003 or 2008
I will get using a static IP, I have asked a few company's im just getting quotes.(It will be on a business line)
For backups i will be using RADI5
Im looking into what i need to do about, emails, mysql, control panel's and security software.

In my book, if you are doing this for a commercial venture that's fine and I would go ahead with it. If it is a hobby type thing it is going to cause you loads of work and expense, will stitch you into an expensive overhead - and you can get a lot of hosting for 700 quid!

May I reccomend some different RAM
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=8&subcat=813
Cheaper and much lower latencies.
And another DVD RW Drive http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=10&subcat=951 It's SATA instead of the old fashioned IDE, so therefore is quicker, more reliable, and doesn't have those horrible ribbon cables trailing from it. And will also be easier, and better to work with than IDE on a newer motherboard. And it's cheaper
Just a suggestion

It looks like you're going to end up paying a lot for this. Doesn't your ISP offer you a free static IP? I would recommend www.bluehost.com for hosting. Unless you're adament you're going to do it yourself.
