I threw in the picture to support my description.
I want to try and set up the AP from my friend's router to my router, so that I can be able to use my computer on the internet without the wireless adapter.
Any ideas?

Wotcha!
Not sure why you would want to do this that way - surely the best bet would be a wireless NIC for the desktop?? Cheaper too - unless I suppose if you don't have a wireless NIC to hand!

Sorry BW - I misunderstood what you are doing - and I would not know if it possible! I guess it might depend on the router? I have dealt with a similar problem by using the LinkSys range extender - not cheap but they do work as I have one here to boost the signal through a long and narrow house.

I have good news and bad news. Good news it is possible. Bad news not with wireless. You will have to run a network cable to your router from your friends router for it to work. You will also have to configure your router correctly so it can be used as an AP. I did this once when I was needed to have wireless two separate places.

One thing about range extenders that I found out the hard way. not all of them work with all routers. make sure you get one compatible with the router your friend is using.

Agreed, although I have had no trouble with for example a Linksys router and a Linksys range extender, and my own setup is a Draytek router with a Linksys range extender.

There is supposed to be some kind of standard but it only works when it wants to!
