Laptop will not stay connected to the internet

My son has a Compaq Presario running Windows XP and we run a wireless router, LINKSYS 2.4 and it has been connecting fine until a month ago. He will click on to the Firefox icon to connect and it will sometimes connect and other times it will not. If it does connect, it will stay for a few minutes and then time out on him. His computer is running slow even if it is not on the internet. Opening icons on his desktop can take longer than usual to open. Any idea where to start? We are running AVG Free and a complete scan has been done to the computer and nothing found.

Moved to Networking forum. Only certain members can reply within the Malware Removal forum so you won't find much help there, plus that forum is for threads including the logs from the removal instructions.

Have a look through this article for the slowness of the computer problem.

You could try reinstalling the drivers for the wireless device on the computer for the connection problem, I will tell you how you can do this once you download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Check the firewall settings perhaps? Do you have a firewall product installed as well as the windows firewall?
Have you installed SP3? - this might have messed up the drivers for the wireless network connection.
AVG free will not necessarily find everything - you get what you pay for.
Visit Kaspersky and run a remote scan from their site on www.kaspersky.com
