[SOLVED] Wireless connection works fine but for 1 thing.

Hi all, I got my wireless network connection set up and working fine, except, i have no security.

I have tried logging onto my router both wired and wirelessly with absolutely no success at all. I need to log onto it in order to enable encryption.

It is a Belkin F5D7130 and I am connecting to it via a Linksys wireless G portable USB adapter.

I have tried ipconfig/all with it both wired and wireless and tried all the IP addresses in IE in an attempt to log onto the router.

I expect many will say there are far better wireless routers out there but the one I have was free as it was being thrown out as the mains adapter had gone walkies.

I do not like the idea of using an unsecured wireless network as anyone could hijack it at any time.

I hope someone can help me with this problem.

[Edit] The Basil connection is someone elses in this building.

Connect via ethernet cable
open your browser an type in the address bar
http://192.168.2.1
that should open up the router's main page for you to configure it as you wish

Some of the Belkin routers have hidden pages which contain information about your line and router.
For some reason they aren't linked to from the main web interface but you can access them by first logging into your router then using the following urls.

Line Stats (inc SNR stats)
http://192.168.2.1/ADSL_status_main.stm

Thanx Klunk, but none of that works at all!

After some googeling, I have found out my Belkin device is called a wireless access point rather than a router. I have no idea if that makes any difference when it comes to setup.

Hello Every buddy !!!!!

First of i would like to say that---- Im Sorry , i´ve been
away from the site for quite a wile ...

But i´m back ...and ready to rumble ...

alright......

The ip adress provided by mr. klunk , is the default ip adress for most
routers .... riks unit is an acces point ...

*The default ip adress for a belkin access point is: 192.168.2.254.
That adress should prompt you directlly into the Web User Interface (WUI).

*The Links provided by mr. klunk , those are support links designed to
bypass the router 1,2,3 easy configurator.... those links are regularlly used
with networking devices that are usually having trouble saving the changes
made by the user. (basiclly they are designed to bypass the WUI and force
your way into the router or access point.)

*You should never ever attempt to access a router or access point VIA
a wireless link... ¨it is not recomended , because it may damage your
wireless adapter¨.

*******heres how to do it *******

1- first make sure that all the other computers and other divices
with wireless capabilities are off (disconnected) from the wireless
network.

2 - Go to network connections and disable your wireless network ...
(if you have a wiffi adapter remove it from the port) , then connect your
computer with an ethernet cable directlly into the belkin acces point.

3- Go to your Cprompt and run the following command:

IPCONFIG /RELEASE (press enter)
IPCONFIG /RENEW (press enter)
IPCONFIG (press enter)

By the time you enter ipconfig /renew the computer would begin
the process of obtaining a fresh ip adress from the access point.

Then when you type ipconfig (press enter) , the ip adress displayed
on the section that says DEFAULT GATEWAY , that would be the
ip adress of the belkin acces point , which will surelly be the
same as 192.168.2.254.

4- Go and access your web browser and enter the ip adress to get
to the WUI. Once your there ...then go ahead and click on Security
in the left hand column under Wireless.

5- Enter your password if any and click Submit.

6- Select WPA-PSK (no server) from the Security Mode section.

7- Enter your Pre-shared Key.

8- Click on Apply Changes.

****************************
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION...

take a look at OUR access point , the usr 5451.

(by the way disregard that red line that goes from the pc with the
nic card & then into the access point.....that line is supposed to go into
the modem/router...the acces point only has one lan port in the back of it)

Notice that it shows the acces point connected to a modem or router.

¨that means that in a wired network enviroment , your computer would be
connected to your router or modem then ... that means that your pc´s ip
adress and your access points ip adress is being assigned by that modem
or router´s DHCP server ¨.

If that is the case the you need to log on to your modem or
router´s WUI , look for the client devices log and locate your acces
point LAN ip adress.

Then you type that ip adress into your browser and it will definetlly
get you to the wui.

When you are finished setting up your access point , re-insert the
adapter or re-enable your wireless network connection , and try to
re-connect to the belkin wiffi network.

you will notice that it will ask you to enter your key.

Note : if everything fails then reset your access point and try everything again.

It will work ... im sure of it ...

Regards Rolfman ..

I just managed to get it working by eventually finding some rather "camoflaged" instructions on the Belkin website.

Quote:
Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP

1. Go to the Windows control panel and double-click on the Network icon or
the Network Connections icon.

2. Right-click on the Local Area Connection for your Wireless adapter and
select Properties.

3. In the General Tab select
the Internet Protocol
TCP/IP settings for your
wireless adapter and click
on the Properties button.

4. Select the “Use the
following IP address”
radio button.

5. Enter and IP address in
the same subnet as the
Access Point. For
Example: 192.168.2.200

6. Enter the following
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 then click OK

Note: Once you have completed configuring your WAP, repeat steps 1 through 3
above. Then select “Obtain an IP automatically” or set a valid IP for
your computer on the same subnet as the network you are connecting to.
Once I had done that I was then able to access the settings.
