I want to be able to share files between two computers in a workgroup. One computer is a desktop and is running Windows XP SP3 and the other computer is a laptop and is running Windows XP SP2. On the desktop when I go to Start -> My Network Places -> View workgroup computers I can see my computer and the laptop. I can access my computer and the shared documents on it, but when I try to access the laptop I get the following error message - \\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.
On the laptop I can't even view any computers on the workgroup because I get the following error message after doing Start -> My Network Places -> View workgroup computers - Workgroupname is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

Turns out the culprit is ZoneAlarm firewall. I disabled it and was able to access shared documents on both computers fine, but as soon as I turned it back on the same problems occurred. I followed this tutorial http://www.leeindy.com/firewall_zonealarm-1.shtml but it still wouldn't work .

How can I check to see if those security features are enabled on my router?

Donna is right - if your router firewall is enabled you don't need the PC based firewalls as well - in fact they may well conflict and slow everything down unnecessarily.

Hardware and Software firewalls do not conflict with each other.
A hardware firewall is on a separate piece of equipment, your router, which is in itself a small computer, it is NOT running on your system therefore can not conflict with your system's software firewall.
Myself I am quite happy using my router's firewall and XP's built in one.
I had used ZA for many years when using normal modems.
You can configure your router's NAT protection to your liking blocking anything you desire, even filter out naughty words and websites to stop the youngsters seeing stuff you dont want them too.

I have a few questions for you.
Are the versions of windows professional or home?
Can you ping your laptop from your desktop?
