Editing AVI files

The Project:
To take an AVI video file, chop a lump off the end and keep the beginning, saving the cut down original for use as an AVI file.
Shouldn't be too difficult should it?
Anyone any recommendations on the best tool - preferably a freebie as this is a one off - to use for it?
I have a copy of Corel Video Studio Pro X3 but find the thing so unintuitive to use I have given up with it!
Any help much appreciated!
