Hi all and thanks for any help in advance.I would like to convert some of my important dvd's which are in vob file format to avi but am having trouble.I have some episodes of a great show I love which I recorded from tv,the problem seems to be that because I have 5 episodes on each disc I cant convert these to avi as the files seem to get jumbled up.I was told that xilisoft video converter would do the job so I went and bought it but either I am not using it correctly or it just cant do what I am after.I am not sure either if the problem is too that these are vob files, any help on doing this or helping with converting these would be greatly appreciated.

It is not the startsmart I think - I do not have a copy on this machine but if I remember correctly it was something like Nero Home Essentials which you could use to rip tracks and convert them.

The Home Essentials bit was part of the whole package from Nero. Check the programme menu list for all the files in the bundle, perhaps?

No I definately havent got that program. This xilisoft program is supposed to be alot better than that one, you can split the files and all unless I am doing something wrong.I have been only adding the vob's and not the ifo's and bup's, I might try and add those as well to see if that works. I ran a test and removed the ifo's and bup's and the vob files wouldnt play so maybe thats where I am going wrong.

My favorite program to encode any video files is mediacoder. It is very easy to use and opensource.

I use Xilisoft often, only problem it reduces the quality
I recommend WinAvi video Converter, it's designed to convert MPEG, RM and AVI to Vob, but it can do it other way around too. Doesn't reduce the quality as much as xilisoft
Bad thing is that WinAvi ain't free (but that's not a problem for a handy man)

Making a recording in order to watch it at a more convenient time (AKA timeshifting) is allowed, but keeping it "indefinitely ... for repeated use" is not.
Australian Copyright Council Information Sheet G25 (December 2006) refers.
(UK law on this is says the same thing, effectively)
