video file only plays audio, doesnt show picture

ive got an avi file, i changed its codec from DIV3 to XVID using abcAvitag. when i play the file using vlc media player it doesnt play the video, i can only hear the sound, is there a way to change the codec WITHOUT converting the whole avi file?

In a word, no. Codec is a shortening for coder, decoder. Have you tried playing it with WMP with the xvid codec installed?

yes i have, doesnt work, it should play in vlc media player. i think the only way to play it with the xvid mpeg4 codec is by converting the whole avi file.

tried that after you mentioned it, still just the sound plays, thanks for the help rik, but i think the only solution is to convert the video to get it to the xvid codec.

If that fails, try downloading the file again. Is it possible that it was 'healed' by your anti-virus?
