I just use Windows Media Player and RealPlayer. I also have a copy of VirtualDJ - which is very good for mixing.
I too have used VLC and it is very good. And I also have the K-Lite codec pack |

I have the K-Lite full codec pack and use WMP 11 for listening to stuff usually. Unfortunately have to have iTunes, but hardly ever use it to listen to music because it's a stupid program and a bit of a resource hog I reckon. Not on a Norton level, just a bit

iTunes isn't that bad. If I needed to use it then I would, but I don't need it for anything
That MediaMonkey looks good Kevin -- will check it out!

MediaMonkey looks good mate, but I'm used to good ol' WMP now, and I quite like the way it looks and works.
Personally I try and use iTunes as little as possible. One thing that really annoys me about it is that you can put an album on, say, but if you go and look at anything else in your library while a song is playing, then when the song finishes, it will stop and not play the next one. In WMP it just carries on with the album, no matter what you're doing. It's kind of like if it can't "see" the next song it wants on the screen, it won't play it. IMO this is a huge oversight on Apple's part.
Another thing is that if you switch to another open program whilst iTunes is doing something, then it will keep swapping back to it. Many times it has done this whilst I've been on MSN and I've pressed space or a letter, and it's cancelled the operation.
Also, whenever it downloads anything, it uses up the best part of my CPU, causing everything else to slow to a crawl. I have no idea why it does this, but it's extremely annoying.
I could go on...

They both have advantages and disadvantages. Whenever I've used iTunes it has never slowed my computer.

Maybe it's just my lame machine then hehe.
If I ever get my bike tank back and sell the thing, then I'll see if it happens on my new PC

I have iTunes on the main PC as my son has an iPod. He is currently in Iraq so obviously it isn't being used so I should uninstall it. Just haven't yet. It seems to creep back in to the startups no matter what I do. A truly intrusive piece of software!
I like Media Monkey because it is so much easier to work with compared to WMP. It also lets you tag albums or song titles from the web. Something WMP doesn't do very well.

I don't think I've ever done that before so doesn't really bother me hehe.
I find that whenever you update iTunes, it and QuickTime always put themselves on startup again and there's nothing you can do to stop it.
Which is annoying, because it means you have to remove the startup item each time it updates, but I just use MSConfig. Simple and does the job

Audio playback -> Rhythmbox
Video playback -> Gnome-mplayer
Video-podcast aggregator -> Miro
Although I am getting really annoyed at the instability of Miro.
