an oldy but newbe

I been playing with pc's sence 95, ya, I should know better being 74, but I've picup a coulple older pc's 1 is a IBM 2635 hbu and I'm gettin a 2 short beep and error code 00174, is there a web site that tills you the codes now days without haveing to pay for some info, need some help with this one , thanks for any.

Hi and welcome to TST.
This post should really be in the correct section but I am sure a mod will shove it over there eventually!
Your error beeps will depend on who made the motherboard but you could try the following:
Take out the graphics card if fitted - if the beeps are the same then it is the graphic card at fault. Try refitting it which sometimes works as they work loose.
Also take out one memory module at a time - same rule applies.

thank you for your help, I never had lap iop apart, so I just start taking screws off, colar coating as I go. thanks again.

Hello, donb, and welcome to TST

Assuming the laptop has an IBM BIOS, which I'd have thought it would have being an IBM, it could be a POST error which will give you an error code (most likely your situation), or if it is one long and one short beep it is a motherboard issue.

Try searching for info on the error code you have been given, more likely than not somebody else has had this issue so you may come across another forum thread with the answer.

start up disk

now when I turn it on after 2 min. it ask for a disk also want me to hit f1 which show a number and the curser down belong it. and notheing else will work. so I guess the next thing is finding a start up disk, can I make one from my windows xp or would it be to big ? thank you for your input.
