With 512MB RAM and an 8GB hard drive it's no wonder it's slow. You really would have been better off with Linux.
The version of this netbook that is designed to have XP on it has a 120GB hard drive and 1 GB of RAM.

It was not designed for xp Quote: |
The lack of a typical, spinning hard drive helps keep the unit's overall weight down, as well as allowing it to run cooler. Best of all, if you drop the unit there is less chance of losing your data due to a damaged drive
| So what does it have then ??

Actually 512MB is 2 to 4 times minimum requirements to run XP.
Disk capacity has nothing to do with speed.
The processor speed is adequate. Memory is expandable but not necessary.
I can't tell you exactly what is wrong but something is causing the slug performance.
How did it run with only Linux on it?
If it was also slow then, XP wouldn't be any faster.
Good luck. |

The ZG5 linux version ships with a 8gb SSD drive which is known to be slow on both reads and writes. I imagine that the default XP setting to index files could seriously impact performance if the SDD is already slow to begin with. The unit should have shipped with 1GB of ram installed which should handle XP just fine. It is worth noting that Acer Ones that support XP have at minimum a 16gb SSD drive with most offering a real hard drive.

To put it plainly. It isn't designed to run Windows XP.
I bet there aren't any XP drivers for it either.

For those people who do have problems with the Acer One SSD versions running slow.
My acer one shipped with XP SP3 installed. One day I reinstalled Clean XP but formatted the Drive NTFS. As it booted up into the GUI it was SO SLow, I was LIKE UH>?
Anyways, The SSD Needs to be Formatted to FAT32 for Speed. NTFS really tags the files and Slows the drive down.
This litte machine runs great under XP even with a bunch of widets and IE temps on a SD card.

How did you manage to take of Linux, and put windows XP on it. It comes with Linux Pre-installed. it is a SSD Drive, did you use a usb, or external CD/DVD to put XP on?
Interested

This notebook was also available with XP installed, and without linux. True, it is slow, has one 8GB SSD card which comes with the package, and no HDD, but a second SDD slot. Cards are available now up to 32GB, and I understand that a 64 may also be available. But unfortunately, it is still incredibly slow, and it begs for more ram, which I am going to do. For those who have changed over to more ram, the SSD models have 512mb of ram on the motherboard, and 512 in a single slot, which of course, is changeable, right?

The problem of the zg5 is the solid state drive and it has a very slow write speed. I installed Flashfire on mine ( FlashFire: SSD Accelerator) (a driver specific for solid state drive) and it performs at least 50% better.

Hi,
I have exactly the same computer but never tried XP for the low memory. However it is possible to make a decent computer out of it by installing Ububtu Netbook Remix 09.10 (this is the latest install).
The process is rather simple provided you have a free 1 GB USB stick.
You would have to download Unetbootin and the latest Ubuntu Netbook Remix iso.
Then start Unetbootin and in the top left selection field pick Ubuntu. in the ISO field you pick you iso and VERY IMPORTANT .... down in the middle you select the drive letter corresponding with the USB stick you have stuck in. Then let this programm run. It will take a couple of minutes. When done select "Close"
Most easy to these steps on a regular Windows machine....
After this is done your USB stick should be ready. Start the Aspire One with the USB stuck into a proper place and press F12. Then you select to boot from the USB.
Ubuntu should start now.
If you appreciate it .... press Install Now (don't know exact Buttonname)
Wireless networking is excellent !
Empathy allows chatting
Open Office will do all the paperstuff ....

Are you installing it in FAT32? It cannot be installed in NTFS due to SSDs having problems with the file tagging (IIRC anyway).
Also, I have a Pentium M 1.73ghz/30gb laptop that WAS running 256mb DDR1, and even that was actually pretty quick (not far behind my PC actually)

I never selected anything myself but Ubuntu created Ext4 partition for itself at installation.
Seems to do the job.
