Windows XP won't boot?

Hey everyone,

A friend of mine is having some issues with her computer, apparently she came home today, switched it on and it refused to boot. She had a screen asking if she wanted to start normally or in safe mode, etc... She has tried all of them so far and she got a blank black screen everytime.

Last time this happened she rang PC world and paid £90 to get it reinstalled. The first thing i thought of is that something might be out of place cos she said shes been moving the computer round a lot, but if something was out of place then the computer wouldn't start at all, would it?

Also, her cd drive doesn't work as one day she decided to lean on it and broke the tray xD and whenever she plugs something into one of the usb ports at the back the usb thing would push in a bit.

Thats all the information i could think of. I'd really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. I dunno where to start from xD

Need to know a bit more - what version of Windows? What anti-virus?
BTW if she has Windows XP SPIII and McAfee then a McAfee update could be responsible.

She doesn't have an anti virus, and i think she has SP1. She turned it on yesterday morning and it started working again when she chose to start windows normally, so i'm suspecting its a dodgy hard drive
