Hi,
My laptop has become very slow in the last 2 months - sometimes it comes to a full stop and I cannot do anything for about 10 minutes (that feel like an hour) - this happens about 2 to 3 times a day. I am using Windows XP and all of this "coincidental" started to happen when I changed the anti-virus program to one from F-Secure.
Thanks for any help! Jon

Thread moved to more appropriate location.
Did you uninstall the old anti-virus before putting the new one on? It could be that the processes are conflicting which would cause this.

Hi,
Yes - I uninstalled the previous anti-virus.
Any other thoughts please? Thanks.

Things to check:
How much space do you have free on your hard drive?
Click on ctrl-alt-del and check that the running process count (bottom left hand corner) is not more than about 50
let us know what you find?

You could temporarily uninstall Fsecure and see if that solves the problem.
If not, I suggest you take a look at this thread HERE. |

Thank you!

Too many processes!
Open the run command (window key + R) and type in msconfig and then click OK
go to the start up tab and select "disable all" - now go through the list and click to re-enable anything to do with your antivirus. This presumes you do have some AV?
Click OK and reboot.
Clear the opening dialogue box with a tick and recheck the processes and how the thing performs - and let us know.

Make sure its the start up tab though and not the services tab

Hi,
I did what Albert L. suggested and now have 55 processes still running. I'll work with the laptop and tell you if there is an improvement.
Thank you all!

By the way, I have 512 RAMS - could that be a problem?
Thanks for your help - any one.

More memory is always a good idea - but this machine has been getting slower so must have been ok with 512Mb before.
