I just got my new computer and I am wanting to do a fresh install of my windows xp pro which is currently registered on my existing computer. I have never done an install of windows before always relying on a professional to do it for me. I have done a complete back up using my Karens replicator on my existing machine and really am wanting some advice on how I should firstly install the XP and go about registering it from my disc and secondly what steps I need to take after installing the XP. No doubt after installing XP I would need to get the antivirus in first of all then maybe the Malwarebytes and SAS. Then really all that is left to do is copy and paste what is left in my docs on the back up over to the my docs on the new comp and installing all the programs which I wish to keep. Might pay to install a browser into the system too. Any advice would help me out heaps. Cheers
Hello is anyone home
I just want to clear up a few things after talking to a friend of mine today. I am currently using my windows xp pro on my existing machine and am wanting to install it on my new machine, am I able to do this and will I need to enter my product key to do this? He seems to think you can only register 1 xp to one machine after that he says I need to buy a new operating system. I thought I could at least install it without putting in the key and then transfer the registration over after I have transferred everything I wanted to transfer.

Hi Wayne
I thought I had answered this weeks ago!!
The legality of your windows installation only comes into effect when you activate it. If you have "killed" the old installation before you activate the new one then you are not in breach of MS rules.
Hope this answers the question!
cheers

Ok no problem, you probably did answer the question I just didnt understand it correctly my mistake. So I can install it I just cant activate until my existing one is uninstalled. So I am guessing if I buy a new xp pro all I have to do is enter the product key I am ready to rocknroll. Sorry if I seem a bit of a noob but this will be the first time I have installed an operating system.

If you buy a new one you don't need to do anything with the old one.
Don't worry about asking questions - we were all noobs once!

Well I have encountered 2 problems already unfortunately.I have installed windows and all seemed to go quite well except I didnt see the window that pops up which comes up with network settings,it didnt even come up, it skipped from date/time settings to the screen resolution window. I have a feeling that this might be why I havent been able to get the internet working. It was already setup through my modem/router before hand so should have been just plug and play. Rang and spoke to my isp and they seem to think that I havent got a network card. I spoke to the guy who built it and he says the machine has on board network card and sound card. Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction to get an internet connection then I can give my wifes laptop back
The second problem is a video card problem which I will post in the appropriate section. Any help I would be very thankful for.

The problem with the network is usually because your network card drivers were not installed at that stage so the install routine assumed that no card was present and did not offer you the option. Check to see if your drivers are installed (in device manager) and install them if not - this should also cure the internet problem at the same time. The comment from you ISP is probably right.
Now for the video question....
