Interesting articles that pretty much confirm my experience. One thing I did not see mentioned is the impact of indexing services on performance. Microsoft advises that you can search the hard drive faster with the indexing enabled, but it does have a major impact on system performance. I think most people would prefer a search for files on the system take longer when they occasionally perform such a search, than take the performance hit from the indexing service all the time.

I have just done a new build for a mate - middle of the road system for office work so nothing fancy. Everything worked snick snick and we were both impressed with the overall performance of the thing. Until we installed the software for his HP multifunction printer - now there are 6 or so addtional processes running, the PF usage has gone up and performance noticably slower. We will revisit this and try taking off half the garbage bundled with this software.

I have noticed this issue with HP MFP's as well as their cameras. The imaging software is bloated and seems to be the primary culprit. There are also some auto updaters that can be disabled from the startup, which seems to help.

The temptation is to accept the easy install - this HP thing even added lumps to IE7 for goodness' sake!

Look on the bright side, at least you are not dealing with one of HP's lousy dv model laptops with an AMD cpu. I bought one a couple of days ago, what a mistake! I have now crossed HP off my list for anything besides calculators.

It's not just HP doing this - there are all sorts of horrid little laptops out there with Vista as the OS and which are barely capapble of running XP. And as for these things they are giving away free - it will come back and bite their bottoms as they are so painfully slow. Are all HPs like this - Oh Yes!

I agree about Vista laptops being underpowered but HP is probably looking at a class action lawsuit about the motherboard issues with their AMD powered laptops. They already have added 2 years free repair for known issues, beyond the warranty period to avoid the lawsuit but I think it will happen anyhow.

Can't be doing their name much good, anyway. HP want to be all things to all people, which it why they gobbled up Digital and Compaq. Now look at them.

So, the slowest setup would be an Emachine with vista on it running Norton and using an HP printer then?!?

You forgot running the bundled AOL to make the machine fall over and die.

Athlon 64 X2 4000+, running at -2GHz haha
I've seen that list of what slows Windows down before, and it's very interesting. No surprise that Norton is right up there

AOL dial up and Norton work really well together to keep all the nasties at bay. AOL makes sure there isn't enough bandwidth for 'em and Norton makes sure there isn't enough system resources for 'em.
