Pagefile.sys

I have been trying out spacemonger prpgram to see whats eating up my hard drive space

I have this one file Pagefile.sys which is 1.4 gb
I know this is used by xp for the virtual memory

I also read you can turn this off if you have a large amount of memory
Quote:
click start
right click my computer
click properties
click advanced (tab)
under performance click settings
click advanced (tab) under virtual memory click change
i only have a Gig so would i need to leave it ?
thanks

It is a myth that the size of the pagefile should be usually around two to two and a half times the physical memory you have. A more practical way would be to set the pagefile according to the amount of resources used on your system. Read this article that discusses the subject extensively and you will be able to judge for yourself how much virtual memory you should allocate. Hope that helps.

1.4gb is nothing if you have a large drive of 100gb+

I always set VM (pagefile) to System managed size, select option and click Set button

How big is your drive and how much free space is on it?
Are you in need of freeing up space on your drive?
If not, leave the VM as it is
