I would bet good money that it is RAM - or maybe a long shot would be a failing capacitor - got any fat caps?

Can try this as well Alan Quote: |
put your WinXP CD Then start up, & hit ESCAPE while booting. You should get a dialogue that asks if you want to boot from CD, from Hard Drive, or go into Safe Mode. Boot from CD. You'll get the Windows OS Installer. Try using the REPAIR option.

Wishes it would work for you

I have tried everything, I even formatted the drive and tried to install a linux distro, but none of them suceeded in fully installing, so I think it may be the hard drive.
I checked the motherboard, and no fat caps.
The problem is I do not have a spare drive to try it out.

This may sound silly, but do you have a spare data cable you could try with the hard drive, they do go wrong from time to time.

Rik that was one of the first things I did, as I have a few spare IDE cables, but I forgot to mention it.

I meant a pci raid card, to see if the thing will boot via it.

Morning Alan
Have you run a test to confirm the RAM is OK? Download from Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool and copy to a floppy.
You to me is only 50 miles if you fancy a run in the country! I shall be here all day if I can help.
cheers

Hi Albert, if you have a look at posts 16 and 17 you will see alan has already run memtest on it.

I will leave the posts in for now, it show alan that we are thinking of him.
A thought, memtest should really be run for atleast 7 passes, not sure if he did more than 1.

Not entirely off topic, I noticed that the last time I ran memtest it only did one pass! I was a bit pushed for time so didn't check further.

I did only do one pass, but this morning I left it running 4 hours and it did 9 passes and no faults.
I wished i lived in a tower block, then I could go to the top floor and throw it of.
I am going to borrow a hard drive and start again.
