Rik,
Just a quick update on my situation here ...
I looked around on the net a little for info about repairing system.dll and wasn't able to find much ...
Then I got to thinking that since we needed the Windows 7 SP1 update anyways, that maybe SP1 would overwrite the bad system.dll with a good version during installation ...
Anyways, after two unsuccessful tries to install SP1, it worked on the 3rd try ...
Then I ran mbam with the latest signatures in normal mode. It ran to completion and reported no infections found. See log of that run attc'd.
Then I ran 'sfc /scannow' and it ran to completion with no issues found as well ...
So, on that basis I am thinking that the SP1 update did indeed replace the corrupted system.dll with a good version ...
So, finally Rik , thanks for all your support on resolving this problem ( I hope it resolved !! ) ..
I hope you can wrap up this thread with a final post to maybe summarize what all happened here and whether we are really done or not !!
I will check for your reply from my desktop.
Best Regards , Foggy

That's great news indeed. I too was unable to find any useful info!
What I would suggest you do now is de-fragment your computer with defraggler which can be found here - Defraggler - File and Disk Defragmentation - Free Download
Then do a registry clean with Ccleaner which can be fond here - CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Run the registry cleaner several times until it finds no more problems.
Lastly, clear your old system restore points as malware can hide itself there.
To do this, run windows own disk cleanup, in the more options tab you will see system restore with a cleanup button, just click that!
Once done, I recon we can declare your computer fit as a fiddle!
Just keep an eye on it for a day or 2 and see ow it performs!

Hey Rik ,
Well , it's been a couple days now since the SP1 install and the wife says everything's good.
We even figured out how to adjust her mouspad to make it behave a lot better ...
Yesterday we tried to do a 'system image backup' , but both times it failed on the 2nd DVD with some error number I didn't write down ...
Being basically fed up with the whole 'Microsoft paradigm' , I'm done messing with her laptop for now ...
She's happy again to have her computer back so she can Facebook 24/7 once more ...
Thanks again for your help, Rik !!
Till we meet again , Foggy

A registry backup might be a good idea. To do it, click start, search, and type regedit in the box and press enter. Click on file then export and save a backup to a location that you will easily find. To restore it, you do the same except click on import.
Another idea to help her stay out of trouble, download and install WOT - Safe Browsing Tool | WOT (Web of Trust)
It is a phishing filter that will rate all websites that are visited and will block the really bad ones.
