So I just installed Ubuntu on my spare Dell. Runs it rather beautifully I must say. I have actually had ubuntu for a while just no spare PCs to put it on. Finally I got my chance. So know I want to try that 3d cube thing that howard posted a while back. Any instructions on that would be great.
Oh and I have 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition.

wow I must say ubuntu is pretty sweet! if it just had the support of the games I would easily switch over to it. Got a question though. How did you get the cube? Mine is just flat two flat panels. I was looking through the options for the cube and played with it but couldn't get it to be an actual cube.

In the compiz settings manager click where it says Genreal Options. Click the Desktop Size tab and set the Horizontal Virtual Size to 4.
Quit out of compiz manager and you should now have a cube.
BTW: Holding down the middle button/mouse wheel, should enable you to move the cube through different planes. |

Ok now thats cool! Thanks Howard!
I opted to use ubuntu today becuase my DVI port on my new 22 inch monitor isn't working properly. Gotta call newegg on monday bout that. At least my VGA port is working right.

Ya hopefully they will replace it and I won't have to go through the manufacture.
One other question. How do I get my own pictures on the top and bottom of the cube? I know there is that spot in compiz on the cube settings that you can add a picture but that seems to do nothing. And I did make sure that it was a .svg format so it would show up. Well actually when I saved it I just put it in the .svg format.
And on the skydome part how do you get a picture to show up on there to?

The skydome images as far as I'm aware need to be .png images.
I also think the cube caps need to be .png images as well.
I'm not in Ubuntu at the moment, so if you can't figure it out, let me know and as soon as I can I'll boot into Ubuntu and get some instructions for you.

Hmm still can't figure it out. lol
Whenever you happen to get around to it is fine. I am switching over to my XP desktop now anyway. Which means taking off the VGA chord on this computer and moving it to my other since my DVI is bad. So I probably won't be back in ubuntu for a little while.
Oh and if you know of some really simple instructions on how to actually install stuff on ubuntu that would be awesome to. Thats one thing that I find hard on here.

Hi Sam, I finally found time to boot into Ubuntu lol.
Cube caps, here's what you need to do.
Click System/preferences/Advanced desktop effects Settings. Scroll down and make sure cube caps are ticked/enabled. Click cube caps and open the appearance tab.
Under where it says Top Image files, click New. In the small window that opens, click the browse button and browse to the image you wish to use. Note: It must be either a .png or .svg image. Click the image you want to use and click open, then click close on the small window.
Clicking the Space bar should enable you to switch between the image you just chose and the default image. That's it, you should now have the image you chose as the cube cap.
Do the same for the bottom cube cap.
I hope this helps.

BTW: Switching the bottom cap is not enabled by default, so you would need to do that on the behaviour tab and choose a key combination to use to switch images. |

Got another question... I know I am full of them haha
Figured I would ask here rather than start a new thread.
Do you guys know of any disk partitioners for ubuntu? I want to dual boot the windows 7 beta with ubuntu. I would do it on my main PC, but didn't feel like it haha. I figured I would do it on my dell since its my play around with PC.
