XP versus other OS?

I'm getting fed up with all the problems I've had using Windows and would appreciate your comments re other other systems, I'm told a Mac is good and has less problems and Linux is harder to master, please give me your views and help me in making a decision

thanks Donna, my nephew has one too and after talking to him I could be persuaded to change, I know absolutely nothing about it but we all have to start somewhere, no doubt I'll have lots of questions before I make up my mind

Isn't it perplexing to have so many people using the same OS but experiencing
many different problems or, in my case, no problems at all EVER.
This lappy is 2 years old with XP Pro and has never crashed due to OS failure.
I have on occasion had to do a SR due to a a bad M$ update. That's about it.
I know how to use Linux Live CD but never needed to use it on my system.
No brag, just fact.
Good luck, Dotty.

Hi Dotty.

If your system is constantly crashing, maybe have a look at this thread HERE.

There has to be a reason for the crashes and once we know what it is, we can go about helping you fix it.

Howard makes a great point. XP is solid as a rock in most cases.
Hardware or drivers are more common causes of crashes than the OS itself.
Back in the day, and I was in it to my neck, hardware blamed software,
software blamed hardware, and then both blamed the phone company.
Hardware and software probs were easier to separate back then but now
takes special skills to localize specific faults much less isolate them consistently.
It can be a real PITA unfortunately but when the culprit is found, it is a great
satisfaction of accomplishment. Trial and error and swapouts with known working
components are a must in many instances.
I have never been one for throwing up my hands and demanding/doing a clean
install of an OS.
Dotty, maybe you could open a thread with some specifics on your problems
and then some may be able to point you in the right direction for troubleshooting.

Gunner and Howard are right. If you open a new thread on your problem we might be able to help you get it fixed. There has to be a reason on why your pc is crashing.

Speaking of other OS's, Howard I would love your help on my thread.
How to get the 3D box in Ubuntu (Howard around any where) :)

Cool thanks howard.

Dotty, the only way to really know if you like an OS or not is to give it a try. So if you know someone with a MAC see if they will let you try it out for a while. Or the same with linux.

I wouldn't be at all surprised and that's why I gave you the link.

If you follow the instructions there, I may be able to find out what the problem is.

However, I suggest you start a new thread for that.

thanks Gunner, I've posted in other forums, re installed windows, done test after test, still nothing, I had new ram installed and still have the same problems, it wears you down eventually, some kind souls try to get me to do things that I haven't a clue about nor are they straightforward for me even though I try..

XP is old and out of date. Use W7.
