I have been trying to talk myself into learning Ubuntu so I figured I would order a disk to prod myself along. Who can resist a new CD
I got the disk and 4 stickers today. I guess I'm supposed to promote it now. That all depends on if it kicks my butt or not

You know, apart from the fact Ubuntu is pretty, very usable and really very cool, there is another reason I can think of for having it.
You end up with a dual boot system and that means if Windows should go wrong, you can boot into Ubuntu and get at your valuable data.
That has to be a big plus.

I have an old halfway disposable PC now that I can experiment on so hopefully I'm safe. Won't get around to it till after the first of the year but like I said. That disk is just begging to be plopped into the drive |

I burned xUbuntu and started on it for a few minutes, I don't have the time lately to dedicate to it but xUbuntu looks very user/learner friendly. I know Ubuntu is not as easy but why not dive right in...

I hate Ubuntu for the reasons that it means more typing, more learning and half the flippin drivers didn't work. I sent off for the free CD too - for some reason they sent me 10 I still have 9 unused.
BTW, I dual booted with XP and it caused me all sorts of nightmares - starting with insisting on being the default bootup OS so if I blinked when I switched on I would have to reboot to get back in XP.
[I know how to counteract that NOW - however Ubuntu is history for me as I uninstalled it - another nightmare by the way]
Hope you have better luck than I did, EF.
I'm thinking of trying PCLOS in the near future. Maybe.

All I can say mate, is I installed Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and I have had a lot of fun with it. It does everything Windows can do, plus a whole lot more. While it is true, it takes a little getting used to, it isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and believe me, you'll soon get used to it.
Add to that, that there's a whole Ubuntu support community out there to assist you if you should need it.
All in all, I've been very pleased with Ubuntu and one day, I may stop using Windows altogether.

I don't think I will ever get that hard core with it, but who knows. |

There are only two things that discourage me from installing a Linux distro solely on one of my systems........
Limited hardware support (though I don't blame linux for this, but it's still a put-off)
At some stage of using Linux, it's inevitable you will have to use the Terminal. How are most people meant to know how to use it? It's easy enough to say "learn" but there are many people don't have the time (or patience) to learn. It scares newbies away. Most people just want to get straight to things without the hassle of having to learn commands.
I may learn more about using the Terminal when I have the time spare though.
Other than those two things, I really do like Linux and I would recommend to my friends who are willing to learn, though if i'm being perfectly honest, I can't think of a single one who would be

I agree with you there Josh.
I had it dual booted at one point, but the hard drive I had it on crashed.
I liked it. But trying to flipping install something was a nightmare! lol
I would put it on one of my computers, but the problem is that for some reason, ubuntu doesn't like my 8800GT, or my FX5200.
I will have to try it with the dells onboard to see if it will install then.

How about Xubuntu
Should I go ahead and start with that instead? It's supposed to be the easies version of Ububnu, basically install and go from what they say.

Well, I think Ubuntu itself is pretty straight forward, once you get the hang of it.
But by all means, go for Xubuntu if that's what you want to do.
