Post Application Support under GNU/Linux

Reposting this here, as the list was making the sticky about switching to Linux unnecessarily long. You'll probably notice that a lot of the applications, listed as alternatives, also run on Windows; they are not mistakes. You'll probably also note that a few of them aren't free (as in "freedom"), these aren't mistakes either.

If you have good experiences with running any Windows applications under Wine or if you know of any good Linux applications, that aren't listed here, then please PM me or post in this thread.

Below is a list of alternative applications, that are good to know, when switching to GNU/Linux:

  • Windows -> Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse

  • Miranda IM, Trillian -> Pidgin, Gossip, Empathy
  • MSN Messenger -> aMSN

  • Limewire, Frostwire -> gtk-gnutella (again, Limewire does work, but some users have problems with java applications)
  • µTorrent -> Ktorrent
  • Halite -> Deluge
Image editing:
  • Photoshop, Paintshop, Paint.NET -> The GIMP

  • Adobe Flash 9 -> ? (Either the Flex SDK will have to do or you're just SOL)
  • CDex, dBpoweramp -> Grip, Sound Juicer
  • EAC -> Rubyripper
Compression:
  • 7-Zip, WinRAR, WinZip -> File Roller
