If it is a old, you can try to run Ubuntu or Kubuntu on it.
I have been running OpenSuSE 10.3 for a quite while, I loved it.

It's a slot 7 cyrix and an AT case/PSU, so it is quite old.

First distro I used was openSUSE well technicly first was slackware but its not the easiest so went to openSUSE. Loved that great distro, then moved to Ubuntu too easy really.
I settled on fedora core for quite a while before I moved to OSX

CentOS, is also a good one. Has a nice combination of easy for beginners / full of tools for more advanced users.
Also fairly nice build of linux, very stable. www.centos.org - The Community ENTerprise Operating System
But do note, that Im only recomending that on it being a sever os, suppose it could be used as a desktop too.

Hi Spleenharvester,
I can only tell you that I am running Kubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) and it really works wonderfully for me. I also downloaded all the programs found at the following URL Maybe you would like to try it.
