Just because I could, I costed up the cheapest bits I could find to build a new PC complete and ready to go.
Based on the AMD LE1200 chip, motherboard with onboard VGA & sound, 512 Mb DDR 400, 80 GB SATA drive, IDE DVD/RW drive, mini tower case, 17" multimedia TFT, stock mouse & keyboard, Linux. total £180.29 + VAT
Not that I would want to use it, but an interesting little exercise.

I was surprised how cheap it could be done myself - the most expensive item was the screen at about £77 + VAT. No allowance for labour in building it and no profit margin either. If you add the VAT it would still be under £215.
Can anyone do any better based on UK prices?

Donna - I would not use either of these machines for serious gaming!

True Eddie - but these two are complete with 17" monitor, sound etc etc.
Still I wish I could buy the OEM packs cheaper than I do - would make my systems that much more competitive!

Yeah but remember this £200 is complete with vista, monitor what £60 sound £5.
Yours would be another £100+ to have vista on.
I'm really sad that its like this, that you can buy PC's cheaper than you can build them but its the way things are going, and TBH the particular PC im thinking of has 1GB DDR2 not the 512 in your build.
I used to love building PC but there's no money in it anymore |

These were "trade" costs from ebuyer and an OEM Vista basic is only about 50 quid. See Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic -SP1- Licence and media - 1 PC - OEM - DVD - 32-bit - English - Ebuyer
I only build them to order and for existing clients - as you say there is no margin in this side any more.
Dr S - what RAM are you looking for?

Web design is where the money is at the moment. An interactive website will easily get £1000 for what, 2-3 days work.
Easy money
Even static sites, you can sell websites for £20-£50 and still make money.

I do the basic ones only and charge about £300/400 for them depending on how many pages. No flash but most people seem to want clean simple sites modelled on Google as a style.
If they want more complex I have a contact who does them for me.
Biggest problem is the client mucking about with the brief, mission creep and then trying to collect the extra fees. Really gone off them now and won't do them unless it is for someone special. Quote:

You gotta get them to sign a site breif mate, its the only way to get around that problem and set out a full price list.
I didn't do flash till recently, but its really good once you get into the action script side of things. The only thing I ask of clients is a sketch or some ideas of a theme, im crap with themes, but if I have an idea to work with I can do anything pretty much.
I'm glad some ones trying too keep alive the PC building business, I gave up long ago. Quote:

Nothing happens without the brief - but still they muck you about.
I have not been asked to do a site for a while now - and I think I am happier about that than I should be, if you follow my drift!
