For some people the spec you posted is plenty, just a shame that commercial companies will source cheap, horrible parts, stick them together and sell them at a better price *cough*eMachines*cough*, which you will pay for in the long run.

Sorry Josh and Jason - I aggollopize.
Its true that these machines would do most 'domestic' tasks like email, WP and so on but its a bit like the HiFi racket - cheap = shoddy.

hmm here is the stats of the monster computer witch was 7099€ (7099 € = 5 716.48£)
Cosmos case
1200W Power&cooling PSU
2x nVidia 9800GX2 1GB graphickscard (so 2gb graphickscard memory)
2x Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 processors + Noctua U9B Coolers in both
Intel D5400XS mobo
2x300GB WD Raptor SATA HDD's in stripe raid connection
2x1000GB SATA HDD's (SO total amount of storage 2,6 Terabytes)
4x 2048MB DDR2 800MHz Ram (total amount 8Gb ram)
2x Burning and reading Blu-ray stations jimm's PC-Store Oy
That should run any game and program. And the computer is much cheaper if you build it up yourself.
Packet has no OS, keyboard, mouse, screen or speakers etc.... Just the basic computer
Sorry my bad English :P

You using a 64 bit OS with all that lot?
That's the type off system I was talking about with josh here Cash Points
The only thing I see in that system worth while is BluRay drive. It's better to build energy efficient.
The Q9 series is as high as I would ever go, similar performance to the Q6600 but smaller nm design so it will run cooler.

Ok then I will try to beat the one at Comet....
CPU - AMD Athlon X2 4800+ 2.5GHz AM2 = £36.11
Motherboard - MSI K9MM-V with onboard VGA and Sound = £23.21
RAM - BIOSTAR 2GB DDR2-533 = £13.98
Case - Casecom midi with 350w PSU = £15.69
Mouse and Keyboard - Gigabyte black = £5.99
Hard drive - Western Digital 320GB SATAII = £36.04
Optical Drive - Optaric DVD-RW = £13.54
OS - Vista Home Basic 32 bit OEM = £52.87
Internal Card Reader = £5.75
Total = £217.54 including VAT
Better spec than the Acer at comet too!
Well if good use of the hardware is made, then it's not really a waste It only bugs me when people do it just for a high 3DMark score just to brag, instead of actually using their computer to it's full potential. It just makes you feel that everybody wanting a high-spec computer like that only wants it to brag, but you also have to accept that is not the case for some people.
Well i'd buy almost any processor at this moment in time for energy efficiency. The only few I wouldn't buy is the AMD Phenom 9950 with 140w TDP, I can't be doing with that. AMD Athlon X2 6400+ and Phenom 9850 both with a TDP of 125w, the QX9770/QX9775 and QX9650 which are 136w and 130w TDP respectively.

Good spec for the price there. Well it is still possibly then, but not as easy as it should be. Think about it if you sell that for £220 you will make about £2.50 profit, the acer at comet is still only going to make around £30 but its still a lot more.
And as far as the wattage of some one the new AMD processors, there all way to high, even the tri core phenom's are very poor when it comes to efficiency.

I could probably get cheaper still, that was after a quick 10 minute look for parts. If i really tried I could probably get it down to £200. But it's easier when you have clients because you can understand what they will be using their computer for, so therefore you can have less of one thing they may not use much, and more of another they will make more use of, so you can balance it out.
Yeah it's really put me off even considering getting an AMD. I do feel as though Intel aren't making the most of 45nm with TDP's like that. I feel they could reduce those to at least 95w if they tried *thinking about the Nahelem *
What really confuses me though is the huge jump from 125w to 140w from the 9850 to the 9950, and only a 100MHz increase! Though all the other phenom X4's are 95w so they are worth considering, but they just don't pack as much punch as their Intel counterparts.

If a friend came to you and asked for the cheapest you could do - in my book it has to be the Acer option as it will work out of the box, has warranty and the friend can bother ACER with the problems! Sure as h ell no margin for support in a price like that!

It was great with the lights out. But then it always was - from being about 15 years onwards.
