I am new to the website building thingy. And this is probably a dumb question. But you get "*Unlimited FTP Accounts", why would you need sooo many??

Well you never get anything unlimited, like I have unlimited mySQL database the limit is 999 which is incredible. Joe said with that host you get Unlimited Disk Space, and Unmeasured Bandwidth, this is not the case, you have to read the "smallprint" which will indicate, if you start using a lot of disk space or bandwidth, then they will take you off the server.

Well unlimited FTP accounts, I can't remember the exact amount I have at my disposal, but you get to give members you trust FTP access, like Jaymie does as he is in the tech team and updates our software and fixes any problems. I do agree with you about needing so many FTP accounts, but my host gives them me, so why not? lol

Regards Jason

Speaking of buying your own server. I have been doing some side projects for this guy I know (mainly research, database builds, a few websites etc., pays $25 an hour so its not a bad side project really) and he has been toying around with the idea of becoming his own host. Keep in mind that he is VERY computer illiterate! He asked me the other night what it would take to do this. I know a little, like a server, drive space, T1 line and buying bandwidth. But can you tell me exactly what it would take to do this? He is the type person that could buy a turd for a nickel and sell it to someone for a dollar. He is very smart when it comes to buying/selling/stocks etc. So he is into ANYTHING that may make a dollar and is not shy a bit about trying new things, even if they are beyond his knowledge base.

I am just building up a computer but very high tech and im going with British Telecoms for the Internet on a business line. Bandwidth is cheap and i can update it when i want.

I will be testing it on my website and forum for 6 months and then provide other people with a hosting package.

I am going to use RAID 5, Which is 3 HDD'S so if one goes down the other HDD will pick up and either have little or no downtime. You will have to speak to an ISP for the internet. You always want a static IP address so if the power goes then its the same ip when its back up so you wont have to configure the server again. You can use Windows XP, Vista and MS Server 2003 and 2008 and there are the free ones like Ubuntu Enterprise and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. but im going with MS Server 2003 or 2008.

You could buy a server which is a rack and just upload everything and then add more of you want but you would have to keep it in a well ventilated area and very cool. Where as the PC one you can add alot of coolers in the case like i am. Just dont use the home internet otherwise you will be going against the ISP's term and conditions. More ISP providers do give you bandwidth and for the right price free bandwidth as long and your not using to much then you will have to buy more.

Your own Web server is one of them where it costs money to make money.

For things like hosting forums and control panel for the users you will have to buy that software things like MYSQL is £1000 PA so it does cost. In the long run its worth it if your going to make money. Just make sure that your either know a good technician or are one.

Im still learning more about servers. I already and very computer skilled and knowledge'd and i know more people in the family and friends who are and they are all willing to help me when needed.

I will find my thread about my server that i am building and you can see some parts are pricey

As said i am a noob at doing that. I would like to have a package put together showing what would be needed and the cost. While cost is an issue, he knows that it wont be cheap to set this up. Plus I am not so sure he realizes that he'd have to have some kind of tech support for this venture. He is the type person that thinks everything can be done with the snap of a finger.

EDIT: I am using downtownhost.com right now. Cpanel is included.

I use to have a domain, and everything. I used DreamHost.com, best place ever. Every week my bandwidth increased with no costs. It was one thing I really liked about it. Plus you get a little of everything. DreamHost is a good place. Has all kinds of goodies to go with your package, and Cpanel is included. If I ever ran into a problem, I could e-mail from the cpanel to the DreamHost tech group and get an answer within a few hours, some times the next day. If I were to have a site again, that's who'd I go with. They made me happy very much.

Also, I don't know if they do it anymore. But when I was a member, if you signed someone else up and they used your ID (username) you would get a credit every month from that. So it would go towards your monthly bill or you can set an amount and cash it out if I remember correctly.

I don't know, I just really liked that place very much.
