Tales from the toolrooom - fun with a forum
One of clients is a vet and subscribes to forums in the same way we all do. She called me today to say that one of the vetinary forums had developed a problem and was sending the same message out relating to a specific thread, in German, at the rate of about 1 message every 15/20 seconds. All the messages were the same.
I asked her to read some of the text to me and was able to discover that this was an 'out-of-office' reply. What was happening was that the forum sent the usual notification of an addition to the thread and the subscribers PC responded with an 'out-of-office' reply - which then prompted the forum to send a reply - and so it runs on. This has been running since late Friday afternoon and appears to be affecting all the subscribers to the thread as there have been multiple requests to the mods on the forum to put a stop to the traffic - only about 5700 notifications a day!
I suggested she unsubscribe but that only cures the symptom, not the problem! And I doubt the mods on the forum could do anything except remove the thread.
