This is about viewing video files from a website.
Using IE7 I can open mpg or avi files straight away without downloading.
Using FF 3.0.5 when I open mpg or avi files, FF downloads them first and then opens.
Where/is there option to open but not download these type files in FF?
I have searched FF options and googled the web but find no answer.
Pic files such as jpg have no such behavior.
Thank you. |

I thought you had to download them first....do you have an example site to try?

Choose Bridge in the 2nd harmonic
Then click it again to run.
In FF it has to download before it plays.
In IE it just opens WMP and plays straight away. Doesn't even show it buffering.
I have tried different FF plugins to no avail.
Let me know how yours handles it, Dr, S. |

Yes it may well be just the way FF handles a stream.
It's not a big deal but one of those minor irritations.
Besides having to wait for the d/l, one then has to delete the files.
I can't be the only one to see this as a slight problem. |

When I click the link [second harmonic] it comes up with the box downloading - I changed it to play in IEXPLORE.EXE [or was it WMP? drat I forget ] and checked the box to always do so. It now opens in WMP.
It also said somewhere that you can change it in the options/ applications tab of firefox.
Working here for me now anyway. It never bothered me before but now you mention it - it was a bit of a pain.

OK, Doc, where did you make this change? |

Well:
I had a box open that showed it was downloading and a "open with" browse" button.
But it doesn't show now I've changed it. You could go in tools/options/applications tab of firefox and scroll through to the mpg one and change that to wmp. And all the Windows Media/Audio/Video ones in mine are set to Windows Media Player Plugin now.
edit:
Also I'm wondering if my having "download statusbar" add on for firefox may affect it - I just noticed it shows it downloading beforehand - although it then jumps straight to wmp... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26

I must be dense.
I don't see an mpg setting. Have MPEG4 and Movie Clip settings that are already
WMP. I also see all windows media audio/video files to open with WMP plugin.
I also don't see an option to choose once FF starts d/l of file.
Anyways, doc, did your change stop the mpg from downloading to your disk?
Maybe I just need to step away and reinitialize my frig'n pea-brain. I just saw your edit and will check it out. |

Roll my brain down a razor blade edge is like
rolling a BB down an 8 lane highway.
OK, right, so now I have a BB-brain.
That may be why I still can't open an mpg using FF without d/l'ing the stupid file. |

Mine was previously set to open mpgs in VLC - hence the weird bollard icon in this pic, I think.
Not sure if that affects things either. Plan B
Use the IE Tab add on for firefox.

Thanks for all the help.
I tweaked myself out yesterday but am sorted today.
I amaze myself at getting so intense at something so minor.
Am I alone in this thinking? I think not.
When it comes to my computer, "I fiddle with the middle" in spite of what Oreo says.
"If it ain't broke...." Nah, that ain't no fun. If I break it, I can usually fix it.
