A good defrag software that can clean your hard drives and optimize them for maximum performance is what every computer user needs.

I used to perform defragmenting as a part of regular maintenance operations but I saw no significant performance boosts as most defragmenter companies claim. Raises the old debate again; is it beneficial to use a defragmenter?

Its not something you would do very often in the case od windows defrag
Maybe twice a year Goku
However some defrags run in the background

Yes, I tried that policy too but nothing very noticeable happened. Maybe the difference is better observed on large hard drives. My is so small that Windows doesn't have much time accessing the data wherever it lies.
And defragmenting programs running in the background are not very appealing to me as they will utilize a considerable amount of available RAM.

I know Dr Stranglove uses a defrag program that does it automatically
Perhaps he would care to comment

I use Iobit Smart Defrag. You just download and forget it; it defrags automatically. Quote: |
Pause Auto Defrag when resource usage exceeds 40% [can be adjusted]
| I have used this for years. You don't notice any change because you are always defragged.
And they have a support forum where the developer and mods are very responsive. [I always consider that a good sign]
BTW. It's completely free!

I use the same program as the Doctor. It does a good job of keeping everything tidy, so speed is always optimum. I did notice after installing Windows and my programs onto this 320GB drive and then defragmenting it, everything happens almost instantly
