Wayne check in Advanced tab and make sure you have a tick beside
show prompt to back up reg issues
then when you click fix issues it will give you the choice to back up the reg

Provided you haven`t altered any of the default settings in the Ccleaner options/advanced menu, when you click to clean the registry, it should prompt you to make a registry backup.
However, I have to say, I really don`t recommend registry cleaners at all. Not only is there a risk you could hose your system. But registry cleaning actually doesn`t have much of an impact on system performance anyway.

Thank you Howard - you have confirmed one of my long held beliefs that these things are more often a liability than a help! I have a copy but have never used it - but I do run regedit from time to time and make a copy of the registry as a backup.

I am well aware that you dont gain much by cleaning your system with these types of programs. They do however keep my system running the way I want it to and I also learn something along the way.None the less any advice is greatly apprecciated from all.
I would not recommend a novice use a reg cleaner either but I am well past the novice stage,I hope lol.

Running the Cleaner doesn`t back up anything.
To use the registry cleaner do the following.
Click the Registry icon and click the Scan For Issues button. Once it`s finished scanning, click the Fix Selected Issues button, it is at this point Ccleaner will prompt you to back up your registry and you can decide where you want to place the backup file.

Sorry all my mistake I was using the cleaner function and not the registry function my mistake hehehehe.I just used the registry function and it went through all the normal process' that was previously explained by giving me the backup option which I did and I saved it to my doc's.My last question is if I would like to restore this back up file is it as simple as double clicking on it?

I agree Oldie and that`s why I don`t recommend the use of registry cleaners. At the risk of repeating myself, they don`t actually make much of an improvement to system performance.

Grrr (in a good way ) I hate that saying. Yes it's true for most things, but not everything. It's used way too much.
As already pointed out, cleaning the registry doesn't add much to performance, well nothing that we would see. That said, I still tend to clean my registry once a month if I can.
Remember to always make a backup first: - On the desktop, click the Start button on the left bottom corner
- Click Run
- A new pop-up box should open
- Type regedit
- Click OK
- At the top of the window click File
- Go down to Export
- Type a name for the backup file, and click Save
There, that wasn't so hard, was it? |

So, if something is working correctly, a car for example, then you shouldn't modify it? It's just taken out of context and is not necessarily true. Quote: |

| LOL, I don't get that. That doesn't relate to that saying, does it? |

The registry in a PC is like a petrol tank in a car
it keeps it running smooth
you start deleting bits and pieces and it will conk out

There is a free tool Wayne ERUNT registry backup tool Quote: |
ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
